A higher salary isn’t always the better offer. Compare two offers by what they’re really worth each year: salary plus the bonus you expect and the employer’s retirement match, minus your health premiums and commuting costs.

Job Offer Comparison Calculator

Compare two job offers using salary, expected bonus, retirement match, health premiums, commuting costs, paid time off and one-time payments.

Yearly value = salary + bonus × chance it pays + retirement match − health premiums − commute cost First-year value = yearly value + signing bonus − moving costs Paid time off worth = salary ÷ 260 × days off

Example: $90,000 offer vs $100,000 offer. Offer A: $90,000 + $5,000 bonus + $2,700 match − $2,400 premiums − $2,000 commute: $93,300 a year; Offer B: $100,000 + $3,000 match − $3,600 premiums − $4,500 commute: $94,900 a year; Offer B is worth more by: $1,600 a year; First year, with B’s $5,000 signing bonus: B by $6,600.

How to use the Job Offer Comparison Calculator

For each offer, enter the base salary, the bonus and how likely it is to pay out, the employer’s yearly retirement match, what you’d pay in health premiums and the yearly cost of the commute. Add paid time off and any one-time money such as a signing bonus minus moving costs. Equity is shown on its own because its value is uncertain. The green box tells you which offer is worth more each year.

Worked example

$90,000 offer vs $100,000 offer

Offer A: $90,000 + $5,000 bonus + $2,700 match − $2,400 premiums − $2,000 commute$93,300 a year
Offer B: $100,000 + $3,000 match − $3,600 premiums − $4,500 commute$94,900 a year
Offer B is worth more by$1,600 a year
First year, with B’s $5,000 signing bonusB by $6,600

Offer B pays $10,000 more in salary, but after the bonus, benefits and a longer commute, the yearly gap is only $1,600.

Assumptions and limits

  • Values are before tax; both offers are taxed in a similar way if they’re in the same place.
  • A bonus counts in proportion to how likely it is to pay out.
  • Equity is shown but not added, because its future value is uncertain.
  • Things a number can’t capture, like growth, stability and flexibility, are up to you.

Formula

Yearly value = salary + bonus × chance it pays + retirement match − health premiums − commute cost First-year value = yearly value + signing bonus − moving costs Paid time off worth = salary ÷ 260 × days off

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two job offers?

Add up what each offer is worth in a year: salary, expected bonus, retirement match and other benefits, minus costs like health premiums and commuting. Then weigh the parts that don’t fit in a number.

How much is paid time off worth?

Divide the salary by about 260 working days to get a day’s pay. Five extra days off on a $100,000 salary is worth about $1,900.
