How to use the Unequal Bill Split Calculator
Add everyone at the table, then list each item with its price and who had it. Choose “Shared by everyone” for dishes you split, like an appetizer or a bottle of wine. Enter the sales tax rate and tip, and pick whether the tip is on the amount before or after tax. Each person’s total appears in their own card and the totals always add up exactly to the bill. Use Copy breakdown to paste it into a group chat, or Share link to send the whole split.
Worked examples
Four friends share one $80 bill with a 20% tip
| Bill (shared by all 4) | $80.00 |
| Tip: $80.00 × 20% | $16.00 |
| Total | $96.00 |
| Each person: $96.00 ÷ 4 | $24.00 |
Three people, different orders, 8.5% tax and 20% tip after tax
| Lisa: salmon $24 + salad $8 + ⅓ of a $12 appetizer | $36.00 of food |
| Sam: steak $32 + beer $7 + ⅓ of the appetizer | $43.00 of food |
| Priya: pasta $18 + water $4 + ⅓ of the appetizer | $26.00 of food |
| Tax: 8.5% × $105.00 | $8.93 |
| Tip: 20% × $113.93 | $22.79 |
| Lisa pays | $46.88 |
| Sam pays | $55.99 |
| Priya pays | $33.85 |
| Total ($46.88 + $55.99 + $33.85) | $136.72 |
Splitting evenly would charge everyone $45.57, so Priya would pay $11.72 more than her share.
Assumptions and limits
- Shared items are split evenly between everyone at the table.
- Tax and tip are split in proportion to what each person ordered, unless you choose to split them equally.
- Amounts are rounded to the cent and any leftover cents go to the people with the largest fractions, so the shares always add up to the bill.
- “Round each person up” rounds every share up to a whole amount, and the extra goes to the tip.
- Nothing is sent anywhere unless you share a link. Names are left out of shared links unless you tick the box.
Formula
Frequently asked questions
Is it fair to split tax and tip by what each person ordered?
Usually yes. Tax is charged on what each person ordered, so a proportional split is the most accurate. Some groups prefer an equal tip split for simplicity; you can switch to that.
How do I handle a shared bottle of wine or appetizer?
Set “Who had it” to “Shared by everyone” and it is divided evenly. For a dish only some people shared, add it once per person with the right fraction of the price.
Do the shares always add up to the bill?
Yes. The calculator works in cents and hands out any leftover cents so the totals match the bill exactly.
