How to use the Fraction Calculator With Steps
Type the top number (numerator) and bottom number (denominator) of the first fraction, choose add, subtract, multiply or divide, and enter the second fraction. For a whole number, use 1 as the denominator; for a negative fraction, put the minus sign on the top number. The answer appears in the green box, and the table underneath shows each step.
Worked examples
1/2 + 1/3
| Least common denominator of 2 and 3 | 6 |
| Rewrite: 1/2 = 3/6, 1/3 = 2/6 | 3/6 + 2/6 |
| Add the numerators | 5/6 |
| Decimal | 0.8333… |
3/4 ÷ 3/8
| Flip the second fraction and multiply | 3/4 × 8/3 |
| Multiply | 24/12 |
| Simplify (divide by 12) | 2 |
Assumptions and limits
- Works with whole-number numerators and denominators, including negatives.
- A denominator of 0, or dividing by a fraction equal to 0, is rejected because it has no answer.
- Results are exact; the decimal is rounded to 8 places.

Frequently asked questions
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Find the least common denominator, rewrite both fractions with it, then add the numerators. For 1/2 + 1/3, the common denominator is 6, so 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction and multiply: 3/4 ÷ 3/8 = 3/4 × 8/3 = 24/12 = 2.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Divide the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor. 24/36 simplifies to 2/3 by dividing both by 12.
